MAXTON, Julie

Dr Julie Maxton read law and trained as a barrister at the Middle Temple in London, before becoming a legal academic.  She spent a number of years on the Law Faculty at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch before taking up a position at the University of Auckland, where she was Dean of the Faculty from 2001- 2006. Specialising in appellate cases, Julie appeared in court regularly (including in the Privy Council in London) while discharging her teaching and administrative duties at Auckland, where she also served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Postgraduate Studies. She has just finished a five year term as Registrar of the University of Oxford and has taken up her new position as Executive Director of the Royal Society where the current President is the Nobel Prize winner, Sir Paul Nurse. Julie retains her connections with Oxford and is a Fellow of University College.
