HAZELKORN, Ellen

Professor Ellen Hazelkorn is Director of
Research and Enterprise, and Dean of the Graduate Research School,
Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland; she also leads the Higher
Education Policy Research Unit. She is a consultant to the OECD Programme on Institutional Management of Higher Education (IMHE ), is a member of the Board of the Higher Education Authority and is also associated with the International Association of Universities (IAU).
Professor
Hazelkorn has worked/is working with universities and university
associations around the world, including New Zealand, Australia, the
Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Jamaica, Sweden and Serbia. Ellen is a
member of the Irish National Digital Research Centre (NDRC) Management Board and the International Advisory Council of the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences .
She was a member of the Review Body for Dutch Higher Education (2010),
and the review teams for the state of Victoria, Australia (2009) and
Catalonia, Spain (2010) and forthcoming for Wroclaw, Poland (2011) on
behalf of the OECD Review of Higher Education and Regional/City
Development. She has been nominated to the Board of the United Nations
University. Ellen was Rapporteur and lead author for the report of the
EU Expert Group, Assessing Europe’s University-based Research (2010),
and a member of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Foresight
Working Group [Ireland]. She is also a member of the Executive
Committee of the Dean and European Academic Network (DEAN), and of the
Editorial Boards of Higher Education Management and Policy (OECD) and
Higher Education Policy (IAU).
Prof Hazelkorn was formerly Director and Dean of the Faculty of Applied Arts, DIT (1995-2008), and Company Secretary, Contemporary Music Centre (2001-2007). Ellen has been Board Member on Higher Education Equality Unit (1996-2002) and the European League of Institutes of the Arts (2000-2002), and Deputy Chairperson, Centre for International Technology and Education – a consortium of European academic, research and industrial institutions developing EU research programmes in intelligent digital content (1996-2000).
She was awarded a BA and PhD from the
University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the University of Kent,
Canterbury, respectively. She has been a visiting fellow at the
University of North London (now London Metropolitan University), OECD,
Paris, and the Centre for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE),
University of Melbourne.
Ellen
has authored/co-authored approx. 60 peer-reviewed articles, policy
briefs, books and book chapters on politics and society; digital
technologies, gender, work practices and the cultural industries;
relations between the media and the state; and higher education policy.
Since 2005, she has been an invited/key note speaker over 50 high-level
international events, including OECD, EUA, World Bank, IUA, UNESCO and
the World Social Science Forum.
