A case study on scientific development leading to innovation in the Brazilian Oil and Gas (O&G) industry will be presented. A brief introduction of the O&G industry scenario in Brazil will set the background for the discussions concerning the Research and Development (R&D) approach and the challenges that create innovation in this context. The Brazilian regulatory framework for R&D investments in O&G will be highlighted. Special consideration will be given to the role of Petrobras Research Center (CENPES), its main resources and the investments and infrastructure that support its scientific development initiatives. This presentation will also emphasize the significance of human resources, engineering as a base for innovation, and strategic technological partnerships, both internal and external, along with the importance of local capacity building with universities, research centers and suppliers. Finally, the main outcomes in terms of innovation and industrial results will be presented – the development of knowledge and technology that allowed the Brazilian O&G industry to overcome its technical challenges.
