SOMLYÓDY, László

László Somlyódy is professor at the Department of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering (DSEE) of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He was director general of the Water Resources Research Center (VITUKI) in Budapest, director of Water Resources at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and head of DSEE.

He has broad experiences in about ten countries in water quality management, modeling and monitoring, eutrophication, wastewater engineering, flood control, river basin management and regional/global water/environmental issues. He has been leader/participant of many studies in Hungary, CEE, Europe, Brazil, China and Singapore. He is author of ten books, about 120 articles, and lectures in about 40 countries.

Prof. Somlyódy is member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (chairman of its Engineering Science Department, 1999-2005), Hungarian Engineering Academy, European Environmental Science Foundation, European Academy of Sciences and Arts, International Water Academy, a number of Hungarian, EU and international high level advisory boards, and journal editorial committees. He was president of the International Water Association (2004-2006) and chairman of the Scientific Committee of the European Environmental Agency (2006-2009). He is the funding father and president of the Hungarian Wastewater Association (2002-2012). He is the recipient of the Széchenyi award (2002), Flood Control Award (2007) and My Mother Country – award (2009) among others.
