Mello, Luis Eugênio

Luis Eugênio de Mello has devoted attention to several areas within the neurosciences, thus contributing to nucleation of new groups in scientific issues in the country and abroad. The scholars guided by Prof. Luiz currently are professors and researchers at the Catholic University of Chile, Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), Faculty of Medical Sciences of Santa Casa de São Paulo, University of Toronto, Canada, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) and Federal University of São Paulo and Universidade de São Paulo (USP). He is currently editor of a section of the Brazilian journal of medical and biological research. He served on scientific boards of CNPq (as a member and coordinator of the CA-BF 2001-2003) and FAPESP (as assistant coordinator of health and biology 2003-2006). He has been devoted to the establishment of new experimental models of epilepsy, seeking to characterize in detail the anatomical, pharmacological, biochemical and physiological changes that are established in the nervous system as a result of neuronal injury. In the area of sleep has worked on the establishment of new animal models in non-human primates to study the physiological and pathophysiological aspects associated with sleep, as well as establishing the pathophysiology of sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome Sleep. In the recent past, contributed in the discussion of the Supreme Court on embryonic stem cells as well as approval by the House of Representatives of the law that governs animal experimentation and creates CONCEA. Its activity ahead of the creation of a network of institutes of technology within the former CVRD (now Vale SA) inaugurates a new operating model of the business private in science and technology in Brazil.
