Cabral, Sergio

Governor of the City of Rio de Janeiro

Sergio Cabral was born on January 27, 1963 in Rio de Janeiro. Eldest son of the writer and journalist Sérgio Cabral and the museologist and teacher Magaly Cabral, he graduated in Journalism. He began his career in politics in 1982, at the Youth of the PMDB.

In 1987, at age 24, he took over as director of operations in TurisRio (Tourism Company of the State of Rio de Janeiro) and created the Club of Greater Age, devoted to create leisure activities for seniors. He also brought to Rio the “Albergues  da Juventude” (Youth Hostels).

In 1990, Cabral was elected State Deputy for the first time. Four years later, he was reelected with the highest vote for the position since the creation of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Backed by a wide parliamentary front, Sergio Cabral was elected President of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), a position he would occupy for eight years. His management was marked by austerity measures, including the end of the special pension for MPs.

He was reelected again in 1998, with the higher number of votes for the position of State Deputy. Among the laws he created during his mandate, there is the creation of Free Pass for public school students, physically disabled and elderly over 65 years (Law 3339/99).

A successful career led Cabral to be elected senator in 2002, the highest vote a politician in the history of Rio de Janeiro. In the Senate, he chaired the Committee for the Elderly and was the draftsman of the National Elderly Statute.

In 2006, Cabral was chosen to ran for Governor of Rio and was elected in the second round, with 5.1 million votes. In 2010, he was reelected governor in the first round with 5.2 million votes, which accounted for over 66% of the valid votes.

Sérgio Cabral is married to lawyer Adriana Ancelmo Cabral and is the father of five children: João Pedro, Marco Antonio, José Eduardo, Tiago and Matheus.
