The challenge of strengthening capacities for formulating, monitoring and evaluation of national policies in land use, rural development, Environment, for Nature Conservation and Forestry.

It is clear that improving environmental governance requires a better ability of politicians and policy deciders (national and provincial parliamentarians, local politicians, members of boards of national and regional administrations) to understand, approve and evaluate policies and strategies that are proposed.
Little or no training opportunities tailored to this very specific target group is available in a lot of developing countries. However, it is essential to improve environmental governance. The interactive session would like to identify the challenges and constraints (SWOT analysis method), the training needs and propose the development of specific approaches increasing the impact and the ownership of national policies

Leveraging The Nexus Between Health Science, Policy & Business: Insights From The BRICS, USA & Europe

Health is big business. It is also a lynchpin of development-based foreign policy. All nations, large and small, invest in global public goods. Together, we strive to secure the right to the health benefits of science for our most vulnerable populations. This story is well known. Less evaluated are the transformational scientific and commercial significances of cause-related health partnerships. International scientific, economic and philanthropic institutions are engaging with civil societies to enable health on a massive scale. Benefits are far-reaching. Impacts alone on skills development in science, medicine and associated industries are profound. Novel business clusters are promoting partnerships, innovations and capacity-building, while creating health-tech transfers, jobs and growth. Diverse enterprises and regions are benefiting. This roundtable brings together global influencers in policy, funding, medical research governance, representative bodies and corporate leadership. Via a flexible format of fact-driven case-studies and a hard-talk-style interview led by an experienced health diplomat, with space for questions, answers and reactions, speakers will unravel how health science drives global sustainable development – or not, as the case might be. First-hand insights into the complex matrix of scientific, policy, commercial and relational challenges involved form an important focus. Best practices and pitfalls encountered when, for example, tackling poverty-related diseases or substance addictions, or deciding how best to exploit modern farming or harvest natural resources, will be given. South Africa and Brazil’s determination to become full and active partners in wider science-to-business initiatives will also be evidenced.
