Draft presentation

Professor Sergio Barabaschi is a Control Engineer with large business and research management experience. He was Deputy General Manager of Ansaldo and President of Ansaldo Richerche. In 1995-1996 he was Under-Secretary of State of Science and Technology in Italy. He was Member of the Board of ASI (Italian Space Agency). In 1997 Professor Sergio Barabaschi was elected Chairman of The European Science and Technology Assembly. In 2000 he was the President of CISAI, an Italian inter-university consortium in Milan, which was created to facilitate cooperation between its eighteen member universities and European institutions, concerning the fields of research and technological development, new information technologies, training programmes and interacademic relationships.

He has been Vice-president of Euro-CASE since 2002, and member of its steering group for "Linking Knowledge and Society".

Prof. Barabaschi is concerned with encouraging permanent, independent platforms bridging national and sectoral varieties, and providing expert advice to EU decision makers. The main objectives of the platforms are to involve civil society in the definition and evaluation of risks, to assist in representing Europe's interests in the world-wide commercial negotiation, and to establish networks between centres of excellence in order to constitute a common knowledge base.

He also emphasises the role of media in improving the appreciation of science and technology to overcome the under-investment of research in Europe in comparison with the United States and Japan. He suggests strengthening the links between science and society by means of improving communication, problem-solving and assisting legistlation.

Euro-CASE is a European non-profit-making organisation of Academies of Applied Sciences, Technology and Engineering from eighteen European countries. Euro-CASE has access to top level European experience and provides impartial, independent and balanced advice on technological issues with a clear European dimension.

By defining, promoting and disseminating a genuine European point of view and corresponding actions, Euro-CASE contributes to the competitiveness of the European Community and the welfare of its citizens.

Current activities of Euro-CASE include a project on "Linking Knowledge and Society" the issues of which are also on the agenda of the European Engineering Academies. The Conference and the preparatory workshops reflect a common wish of the Academies to contribute their experience and views to European and national decision makers, politicians, interest groups and citizens concerned with the gap between Knowledge and Society.

The views presented in the report represent contributions from experts who take part in the Conference and the workshops. We would be pleased to collect further views from the discussion forum below.

Other forums for the exchange of views and experiences between Social Scientists, Academies of Engineering and Research deciders will be organised.

The project is carried out with the support and sponsorship of the European Commission programme "Improving Human Research Potential in the Socio-economic Knowledge Base."
