Professor Nicolaus Lobkowicz

Dr. Nicolaus Lobkowicz studied at the University of Erlangen and the University of Fribourg/Schweiz, where he received his doctorate of philosophy in 1958, having completed a thesis on Martin Heidegger. Dr. Lobkowicz was assistant at the Institut de l'Europe Orientale der UniversitŠt Fribourg from 1958 to 1960, and associate professor of philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA from 1960 to 1967. Later that year, Dr. Lobkowicz moved on to chair of the faculty of Political Theory and Philosophy at the University Munich (Geschwister-Scholl-Institut), where he remained until 1990. As well, in 1970 Dr. Lobkowicz became dean of the Faculty 1 of Philosophy and rector of the Collage of Politics, and then from 1971 to 1976 he was rector magnificus. Dr. Lobkowicz was a member of the presidency of the German National Institute for International and Eastern-European Studies in Cologne from 1972 to 1976, and then from 1976 to 1982, he was elected president of the University Munich. Dr. Lobkowicz was member of the senate of the West-German Conference of Rectors from 1976 to 1982, and since 1978 he has been a member of the West European Advisory Committee of the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

As well, since 1984, Dr. Lobkowicz has been president of the Catholic University of Eichstaett-Ingolstadt. In addition to his presidency, Dr. Lobkowicz has been a member of the following institutions: the Council of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (since 1984); president of the Association of German Freelance Authors (1985-1991); vice president of the European Academy of Arts and Sciences in Salzburg (since 1990); chair of the Central Institute for Middle- and Eastern-European Studies at the Catholic University of Eichstaett (since 1996).

As president of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Dr. Lobkowicz has encouraged the development of an elite university instead of a mass education factory. His main research interests have been the history of Marxism, theory of social sciences, philosophy of culture and political ethics. In addition to these issues, in the past years Dr. Lobkowicz has been concerned with philosophy of religion and the cultural support of Poland and the former Czechoslovakia.
