Recipient of Széchenyi-Award (1993).

His interest in the pharmacology and physiology of transmitter release and its presynaptic modulation was stimulated by his association with Sir William Paton in Oxford where he had worked as a Riker fellow in 1967-69. He has authored over 260 papers and published several books (e.g. Vizi, E.S. Non-synaptic Interactions Between Neurons: Modulation of Neurochemical Transmission. Pharmacological and Clinical Aspects. John Wiley and Sons, Chichester, New York, (1984); Vizi, E.S. (Ed.) Science in the Future of Europe. Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest (1994)). He spent 6 months in Mainz (Dept. of Pharmacology) and 3 months in Parma (Dept. of Pharmacology). He has pioneered the presynaptic inhibition of transmitter release and the concept of non-synaptic "cross-talk" between neurons. His original paper of this topic became "Citation Classic" in 1991., collecting over 800 citations.

His work has been published international journals of high impact: J. Physiol (Lond), Neuroscience, Eur. J. Pharmacol. Br. J. Pharmacol., J. Pharmacol. Exp-Ther., J. Neuroscience etc. Until now his publications received more than 8000 citations.
