Professor Alexandre Lámfalussy

Alexandre Lamfalussy was born in Hungary in 1929. From 1949 to 1953 he studied at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, and then went on to spend two years on postgraduate studies at Nuffield College, Oxford, where he obtained a doctorate (D. Phil.) in economics. Mr. Lamfalussy was visiting lecturer at Yale University from 1961 to 1962, and from 1955 to 1975 he worked with Banque de Bruxelles as an economist and then as an economic adviser. From 1965 to 1975 Mr. Lamfalussy served as Executive Director of Banque de Bruxelles and later as Chairman of the Executive Board. In 1975 he became Executive Director of Banque Bruxelles Lambert. Mr. Lamfalussy joined the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basle in 1976 as Economic Adviser and Head of the Monetary and Economic Department. Between 1981 and 1985 he served as Assistant General Manager of the BIS before being appointed General Manager in May 1985 where he held this post until the end of 1993. From 1st January 1994 until 30th June 1997, Mr. Lamfalussy was President of the European Monetary Institute in Frankfurt.Since 1997 Mr. Lamfalussy has been teaching and doing research at the "Institut d'études européennes" of the Catholic University of Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve. In August 2000 he published a book titled "Financial Crises in Emerging Markets - An essay on Financial globalisation and Fragility" (Yale University Press, New Haven and London). He has also recently served as Chairman of the Committee of Wise Men on the Regulation of European Securities Markets set up by the European Council.
